Online Garda portal for reporting traffic offences will not require specific legal provisions

Specific legal provisions will not be required for an online Garda portal to report traffic incidents such as dangerous overtaking of cyclists, the Minister for Justice has said.

The parliamentary question was asked by Ciarán Cannon (FG), a TD for Galway East.

Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee, said: “Under Action 29 of the Road Safety Strategy, An Garda Siochána will explore the potential of an online portal for road users to upload footage of road traffic offences which could assist in prosecution. I understand that on 04 October 2022, Assistant Commissioner Paula Hilman gave the Joint Committee on Justice an update on this Action, and indicated An Garda Stochána’s commitment to the portal.”

The Minister added: “In relation to whether or not an online portal will be enabled through the Garda Siochána (Recording Devices) Bill 2022, I can inform the Deputy that the legal advice made available to me indicates that specific legislative provisions will not be required for an online portal.”

Ciarán Cannon, a TD for Galway East, said: “This is a very clear indication that nothing now stands in the way of a dashcam portal, other than a lack of ambition.”

He added: “The creation of a portal is a key commitment of Towards Vision Zero, our national road safety strategy. Let’s get it done.”
