“See him on the bike”, driver says as he hits man on bicycle, laughs and says “lol”

A man in his 50s on a bicycle was run down in Dundalk on Sunday by a hit-and-run motorist who recorded his actions, saying he was “heartless” before the impact and laughing after it.

The man who was knocked off his bicycle was admitted to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in the town with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Gardai who said this afternoon that the man has since been discharged.

“Do you know how heartless I am? See him on the bike? Look, look…” the driver says in the recording seconds before the man is hit by the car driver, and the thud of the impact is recorded on the audio. He then sniggers, laughs and said: “Lol, lol”.

The video has been widely shared on social media. The incident follows another in October where an occupant of a car recorded a cyclist being run over along one of the roads outside of Dublin Airport’s perimeter fence.

Regarding the latest incident in Dundalk, a spokesperson for the Garda Press Office said: “Gardaí are investigating a road traffic collision involving a car and a bicycle that occurred at approximately 3pm on Sunday, 27th November 2022 on the Castletown Road in Dundalk, County Louth.”

He added: “The cyclist was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Enquiries are ongoing.”

UPDATED: The Garda Press Office at 14:25 has also issued a press release appealing for information.

“The cyclist, a man aged in his 50s, was later taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda to receive treatment for his injuries. He has since been discharged,” said a spokesperson at the Garda Press Office.

“The driver of the car involved failed to remain at the scene. Gardaí in Dundalk are appealing for any witnesses to this incident or anyone with information to come forward to them,” he said.

The spokesperson said: “Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the Castletown Road area on Sunday, 27th November 2022, between 2.50pm and 3.05pm are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Dundalk Garda Station 042 9388400, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.

  1. “People” like these should be made an example out of. Unintentionally hitting someone is bad enough, but to do it deliberately should warrant a jail sentence.

  2. I am truly disappointed that neither our Road Safety Authority or Roads Policing Unit at HQ level are making public statements directed at drivers warning them about using a vehicle as a weapon directed at bike users or other road users. Dangerous overtaking of a cyclist is on the same spectrum as this case.
The penalties need to be set out clearly so that all drivers know the score.
This is not the first documented case of road violence we have seen recently. It must be stropped.
Ministers Ryan and Naughten also must make statements. We either have #VisionZero or #ZeroVision. Which is it?.

  3. The moron is obviously drunk as well as heartless. As for the Garda in the Press Office describing it as a ”Collision between a bike and a car’. What a shameful description. Do the Gardai not realise a car is a lethal weapon. What about calling it what it is – attempted murder?

  4. Whether it’s a car or something else, this is a person who is taking enjoyment out of causing serious harm to another person. The car is just the tool. Sure it also provides a psychological barrier to remove the perpetrator from immediate fear of harm, but at the end of the day anyone who inflicts harm to another person or animal for enjoyment is at the very least a sadist, and as it was recorded and shared on social media most likely a psychopath lacking any remorse or empathy at all.

  5. Its getting like we’ll have to have someone on our bike-carriers riding shot-gun to protect us.
I heard this poor completely innocent man is badly injured.
