91,087km clocked up by Bolt users in Sligo

— Price increase from 15c/min to 18c/min.

Users of Bolt’s on-street bicycle share in Sligo town — with a population of not much over 19,000 people — have clocked up 91,087km cycling since the system launched in June 2022.

The price increase means Bolt is now more expensive than Lime Bikes which operate in Castlebar town in Co Mayo, the company has so-far stuck with its 15 cent per minute launch price.

The update from the company was presented to local councillors and was posted on the Facebook page of Cllr Marie Casserly yesterday. The company said its users in Sligo cycle an average 2.13km with a rental time of around 11mins.

The company also told councillors in a briefing that it intends to increase its fleet in the town from 65 to 80 bicycles by May of this year.

It also plans to install charging docking stations in the first quarter of the year at locations include Lord Edward Street, John F Kennedy Parade and Ballinode. Bolt said that the most popular start and finish locations are IT Sligo, JFK Parade, Lord Edward Street, Cleveragh and Upper Pearse Road.

  1. The extra bikes are badly needed as it is quite difficult to get hold of one in popular spots like upper Pearse Road!. I understand why its not economic to move the bikes around as happens in Dublin etc but it does mean imo they wont really contribute as much as a Dublin Bikes type scheme to modal shift from driving as for a journey you must make at a given time, eg to an appointment a bike may or may not be available.
The kilometers travelled is certainly creditable but not reliant solely on the population of Sligo. the Transient student population and the summer tourist population need to be added to the 19,000 as the bikes went live in June and were popular with Spanish students for example. When they extend to Strandhill and Rosses Point they will be even more popular with locals and tourists alike.
