Full list of 2023 greenway funding for routes across Ireland

€63 million of funding for greenways across Ireland has been announced today, it follows the recently announced €290m 2023 funding for mostly urban walking and cycling projects.

The funding includes around 70 projects at different stages of planning, consultation, design and construction, as well as staff support for the design of greenways.

...I'm sorry to disrupt you while you're reading this article, but without messages like this, IrishCycle.com's reader-funded journalism won't survive. With nearly 1/2 million views and 300k readers so-far this year, it's not just people who are dedicated to cycling that this website reaches. However, the number of subscribers is around 0.6% of readers. While having a large gap between readers/subscribers is standard for non-paywall reader-supported journalism, IrishCycle's journalism needs more support. Don't delay, support monthly or yearly today. Now, back to the article...

Here’s a county breakdown of the funding, with a full list of projects funded below the table:

As an overview guide: Funding in the millions is more clearly linked to the construction stage, and smaller levels of funding are usually related to the design, consultation and planning stages of projects but some sub-million figures relate to the construction of smaller lengths of routes.

The mostly urban funding is allocated via the National Transport Authority, while the greenway funding is issued via Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), which also covers national roads which were funded to the tune of €491m today.

The greenway funding added amounts to €353m or €0.967m per day for funding for walking and cycling in 2023 — it is €7m short of the Government’s promise of almost €1m per day to be spent on active travel which is supposed to amount to €360m per year. IrishCycle.com asked the Department of Transport and it has indicated that it will respond to this when it can.

In a press release, Minister Ryan said: “Greenway projects of national and regional significance progressing to completion during 2023 include three sections of the Grand Canal Greenway and a section of the Clifden to Recess Greenway. Construction work will continue on sections of the Clew Bay, Waterford to New Ross and Navan to Kingscourt Greenway projects with some proposed sectional openings.”

He added: “This is a very exciting time for cycling and walking infrastructure in Ireland which will provide greater facilities for leisure and tourism cycling in the coming years.”

Minister Chambers said: “I’m delighted to announce the local authority allocations today which will be used for the further roll out of the Greenways programme in 2023. Over 50km of Greenway will progress in the planning approval process.”

He added: A further large portfolio of other projects will progress through early planning, design and appraisal. The Athlone Active Travel Bridge, which is a major piece of cycling infrastructure, forming part of the Dublin to Galway Greenway will be completed in the first half of this year.”
