— Cycle route and footpaths are still undergoing heavy work in some locations, with people cycling diverted to the bus lane or general traffic lane.
Dublin City Council has confirmed that the roadway between Fairview and the Five Lamps — including Annesley Bridge Road and North Strand Road — will be made two-way again from this Sunday evening, September 1st.
As this website reported in May, the finishing date for the Clontarf to City Centre bus and cycle route project has been deleted to at least Q3 2024.
Most sections of the project are expected to be finished by the end of September or early October, with a section at Marino Mart in Fairview being one of the last to be largely finished. Snag work will likely continue after that, at least until the end of the year.
The cycle path and footpaths and some other works, including junctions, are still being constructed and people cycling are still be diverted to the roadway on large sections of the outbound part of the road.
The ongoing work includes work on sections of the roadway and junctions, and in some cases, roads will still only be temporally marked.
Cllr Donna Cooney (Green Party) said: “I’m glad the project is progressing well, and contrary to much misinformation circulating, the diversion was not permanent, even though the reopening of the road to private cars through North Strand was delayed due to unexpected extra work.”
She added: “Residents and all commuters are now really beginning to see the benefits of the project as it nears completion.”
Officials emailed councillors with an update confirming the change, which they referred to as an important milestone for the project.
The email to councillors said: “The current diversion of inbound traffic from Edge`s Corner (Fairview Strand), via Ballybough and Portland Row has been a vitally important element to facilitate the completion of the C2CC Scheme along North Strand Road. Works on the outbound side of North Strand Road have progressed considerably in recent months.”
“On Sunday evening, 1st September, the inbound general traffic lane between Edge`s Corner (Fairview Strand) and Five Lamps junction shall be made available again, i.e. inbound general traffic along Annesley Bridge Road and North Strand Road shall be permitted,” the council official said.
The email update said that electronic road signs are being erected along the route, and notices will be posted on social media in advance telling commuters and local road users that the diversion is to be removed from Sunday.
The update from the project team added: “It is noted that for the next number of months off-peak works (mid-week, evenings and weekends), positioned in the road and the cycle-track shall still be required in order to complete remaining junction installations, snagging works etc.”
