New western pedestrian and cycling access to Grangegorman campus planned

An application for planning permission for a new temporary construction access route and a new western pedestrian and cycling access point to the Grangegorman campus has been made by the Grangegorman Development Agency.

The walking and cycling access point will provide a link from Stoneybatter and Prussia Street to the Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin) and healthcare campus and beyond to Luas at Broadstone.

The shared route will be temporary, along with a temporary construction access route to the campus from Prussia Street. A permanent walking and cycling route plan is to be applied for at a later date.

The temporary route will be 3 metres wide and include public lighting and CCTV.

The walking and cycling links through the campus form part of the National Transport Authority’s Greater Dublin Area Cycle Network.

The current layout of the temporary active travel route does not directly link with St Joseph’s Road on the opposite side of Prussia Street. Lining up with the junction will make it easier to provide a cycling line from the campus westwards or even just enable the crossing of the road to cycle in and out of the access point. No details were given of the permanent layout of the route.

An image (first image below) posted on Facebook by the Grangegorman Development Agency gives the impression that the route will more or less face St Joseph’s Road. But a more detailed drawing and an overlay of satellite imagery indicate that it will be more off-set from the junction (see second and third image below).

The planning application states: “A permanent pedestrian and bicycle link to replace the proposed temporary construction traffic haul route and temporary pedestrian and bicycle link will be provided through the site, subject to separate planning permission.”

The Grangegorman Development Agency said: “This new access is what is intended to become the Prussia Street Gateway, a high-quality prominent access to Grangegorman on our western boundary.”

The planning reference is 4211/24, and a separate application for works relating to the campus wall inside the campus planning zone has the reference number GSDZ4210/24. Both can be accessed via the Dublin City Council planning search portal.
