Free public transport for children 8-years-old and under confirmed in Budget

Free public transport for children 8-years-old and under has been confirmed by Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform of Ireland Paschal Donohoe in his Budget 2025 speech.

The continuation of the Government’s temporary 20% discounted fares for adults, and 50% discount for those aged between 18 and 25 was also confirmed. These apply to Irish Rail train services and only bus routes which are public obligation services — this will likely be the same case with the free travel for children but the details have not been confirmed.

The “€1 million per day” on walking and cycling, set at €360m per year, was also confirmed for 2025.

More to follow.

  1. Do we know yet when this will take effect? Will be great for longer trips. Shorter trips in Dublin are pretty cheap but to have free travel for another child would be great for longer trips. You coudl have a grandparent, her child and her grandchildren all travelling free on train between the universal companion pass and the free travel for 8 and under.
