  1. What is a “pedal cyclist”? Is this the latest Garda press-office dehumanised lingo for an unfortunate man on a bike being killed by a truck driver? If they can so readily make up new terms is there any chance that they could use international road incident reporting standards and apply appropriate terms to road collision components?

I can only assume that in their weird world that it pedal cyclist distinguishes from an ebike when the reality is if it doesn’t have pedals then it isn’t a bicycle.

If it is an ebike without pedals then it is a electric motorbike, similarly I would suggest that an ebike with a throttle is also an electric motorbike.

Maybe they have in mind kid’s balance bikes as a category for collisions???

    • I don’t think it is a with/without pedals distinction but how it is powered i.e. a human via the pedals. I think that “pedal cyclist” might be how cyclists are referenced in law so they are being consistent.

    • Please forgive me, but we are grieving another unnecessary loss of life on the dangerous roads of Fingal, rather than the semantics of the Garda Press Release. FYI when I was young in Manchester bicycles were called pedal cycles.
