Cycling campaigners in Cork are so fed up with the lack of enforcement on illegal parking that they have compiled a list of the top 10 hot spots.
The Cork Cycling Campaign said that the lack of prioritisation of the issue is leading to frequent collisions and deterring people from cycling.
IrishCycle.com understands that in previous years Cork City Council was provided with a list privately first, but given the inaction, the Cork Cycling Campain has just published the list on its website. The locations are:
- Leitrim St
- Monahon Rd, Centre Park Rd and Marquee Rd
- Washington St
- South Main St
- Popes Quay
- Victoria Rd
- North Mall
- Western Rd
- Boreenamana Road
- Liberty St
Campaigners said that addressing the problems requires a combination of stronger enforcement, infrastructure improvements, and strategic planning.
The campaign said: “By identifying these black spots, we aim to push for the changes needed to ensure Cork’s streets are safer and more accommodating for cyclists and other active transport users.”
“We aim to raise awareness of these issues with the relevant authorities, particularly the Gardaí, who should play a key role in enforcing parking regulations and ensuring road safety. By highlighting the most pressing dangers faced by cyclists due to illegal parking, we hope to encourage prompt action that will make Cork’s streets safer and more accessible for active travel,” the Cork Cycling Campaign said.
On its website, the group gives possible actions for different locations.
For example, regarding Leitrim St, which is part of the MacCurtain St bus project which suffers from wide illegal parking, the group said: “Cork Cycling Campaign are requesting design measures to prevent illegal parking on new cycle lanes constructed as part of the MacCurtain St upgrade. Enforcement is not effective in preventing dangerous parking behaviour in this location which often occurs during the evening when parking wardens are not on duty.”
When contacted previously by this website, both Gardaí and Cork City Council denied a lack of enforcement around the MacCurtain Street project but traders and a councillor said the issues continued.

Maybe the gardaí could have someone monitoring this or a traffic warden? Segregated cycle paths would help too
24 hour wardens put the fear of god in people thinking about illegal parking in other cities around Europe. The Irish mentality of shur after 7pm doesn’t mattter… is bizarre, road safety and the law are 24 hour, so why would enforcement be 9am to 5pm Mon-Sat?
Cork city always has operated on the bare minimum of traffic wardens and Gardai. Technology/CCTV would be my preference for reliable and consistent enforcement of illegal parking especially at these locations above
