Schools and sports clubs in the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council are being invited to apply for funding for bicycle parking stands before February 27th, 2025.
The council said that, as part of the application process, schools and sports clubs are required to outline what they are doing to promote cycling and active travel for their students and members. Priority will then be given to those who are actively promoting cycling and to those who have not received cycle parking to date.
Cllr Jim O’Leary, Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, said: ‘‘I welcome the Council’s continued support in providing cycle and parking stands to schools and sports clubs. Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council has one of the most active populations in Ireland, and I hope the provision of cycle stands makes it that little bit easier for students and club members to cycle to school or to attend training or matches.”
He added: “I also welcome the continuing support from the National Transport Authority for the development of Active Travel Schemes and of cycle infrastructure around the County, making it safer for our children to cycle.”
The bicycle stands being provided are Sheffield stands in a free-standing steel toaster layout consisting of five cycle stands on a flat steel bar which will provide parking for ten bikes.
The bicycle parking is paid for out of the Active Travel Programme funding provided to the council by the National Transport Authority (NTA). The council’s budget from the NTA, which mainly supports active travel routes, totalled €20 million for 2025.

TOASTER racks??!!! Still?
Hi Steve, I used the wording the council did but to avoid confusion with wheel-insert type of racks, I’ve edited that to say Sheffield stands in a free-standing steel toaster layout (as the stands pictured).
Ah right, thanks for clarifying.
Basically 5 Sheffield stands attached to a metal base frame that can be bolted to the ground – though many are left loose as in my local NS.
