A school child and a man in his 30s were both hit by separate incidents within an hour of each other involving motorists at junctions along the former N4 in Dublin City yesterday (Tuesday).
The road was “detrunked” in 2012, and its traffic status was reduced from national to regional. However, little has changed with its design since then.
Parents of local school children and other residents have long complained about dangerous road design and driver behaviour, including speeding and running red lights. Red light cameras were installed at the location but were never used for enforcement, and the current camera in place is now inactive.
This afternoon, the Garda Press Office confirmed the details of yesterday’s two collisions and called for witnesses to come forward.
A Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí and emergency services attended a traffic collision that occurred at approximately 8:15am on the 25th of February 2025 on the South Circular Road in Dublin 8. A cyclist and a truck were involved in this collision.”
“The cyclist, a man aged in his 30s, was conveyed to St James’s Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries sustained as a result of this incident,” the spokesperson said.
From a witness account, it is understood that the man cycling was going straight on while the truck driver was turning down the slip and turning it down towards Heuston and the city centre.
In relation to the school child, it is understood that the hit-and-run driver drove down a bus lane to get away.
The Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí and emergency services attended a traffic collision that occurred at approximately 8:45am on the 25th of February 2025 on the Con Colbert Road in Kilmainham, Dublin 8. A car collided with a male child in the course of this collision.”
Gardai said that “no immediate medical assistance was required” and that investigations are ongoing.
Any witnesses or anybody with footage of the incidents should contact Kilmainham Garda Station on 01 6669700.
More to follow.

Have been trying to engage with the council and Gardaí about this junction for over a decade. Still no action. Are they waiting for a fatality?
There’s constant (and brazen) red filter light breaking at this junction too, when vehicles are turning left on to Con Colbert Road from SCR Kilmainham. Never mind the drivers on to CCR from St. John’s Road using the ridiculously wide open spaces as an opportunity to drive like maniacs.
