6-year-old girl killed in collision involving truck driver in Galway

A six-year-old girl died after the truck hit her in the collision at the entrance to the Sandyvale Lawn housing estate on the Headford Road in Galway City.

A Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí in Galway are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision that occurred at Headford Road, Galway this afternoon Saturday 5th April, 2025 at approximately 12.05pm.”

“The collision involved a female juvenile pedal cyclist and a heavy goods vehicle at the junction of Headford Road and Sandyvale Lawn. The female pedal cyclist, aged 6 years was fatally injured as a result of the collision. Her body was removed from the scene to University Hospital Galway and a post mortem will take place in due course,” Gardaí said.

“The male driver of the truck, aged in his 30s was uninjured,” a Garda statement said.

The road was closed and a technical examination of the scene by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators has taken place.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

A spokesperson said: “Gardaí are also appealing for any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) who were travelling in the area of the Headford Road (N84) between Coolough Road/Headford Road junction and the entrance to Tirellan Heights/Headford Road junction in Galway city between 11:45am and 12:15pm today Saturday 5th April 2025 are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.”

  1. “The male driver of the truck, aged in his 30s was uninjured”. As if a six year old child on a bike could pose any remote risk of injury to a man in an articulated truck. And yet every time they feel the need to add these words as if some equivalence existed. As if there is some bizarre need to offset the horror of what happened to a child, through no fault of her own, for just being a child in a world whose messed up priorities cost her her life.
