“Express your support for safe cycling infrastructure” — Dublin campaign group calls on public to join cycle along Strand Road

— Cycle will start at Grand Canal Square at 6pm on Friday, 11th April 2025.

The Court of Appeal is expected to issue its judgment this Friday for the case that Dublin City Council took to try to overturn an earlier High Court ruling against a trial of a cycle path on Strand Road.

But regardless of the new ruling, I Bike Dublin, a cycling campaign group, said it plans to run a leisurely cycle for people of all ages and abilities to show their support for the route to be built and for cycling infrastructure genally.

I Bike Dublin said: “The Strand Road Cycle Route was first proposed by Dublin City Council in 2020. It would have provided a safe two-way cycle route along the seafront from Merrion Gates to Irishtown and would have been a critical link in the Sutton to Sandycove Cycle route connecting the north and south sides of the city along the waterfront.”

“Unfortunately, it has been delayed by legal battles since 2021, but the High Court is finally set to rule on the appeal on Friday, 11th April 2025,” the group said. “Whatever the result of the case, we want to see the cycle route progress without further delay,” I Bike Dublin said.

The campaigners said: “Join us on Friday, 11th April at 6pm on Grand Canal Square for a group cycle along Strand Road to express your support for safe cycling infrastructure.”

They said that the cycle would start at Grand Canal Road and then go through Ringsend and Irishtown. The group cycle will then continue along the length of Strand Road as far as the car park near Sandymount Baths. They plan to return via Sydney Parade, Ailesbury Road and Merrion Road.

The total cycle is around 7.4km, and the group aims to finish at Merrion Square at approximately 7pm.

The group added: “It will be a leisurely cycle, and people of all ages and abilities are welcome. All you need is a bike!”

  1. I am by and large in favour of cycle lanes. However, the one that may get the go-ahead this week along the coast would limit traffic crossing from the north to south Dublin in both directions. It would be better to have purpose built cycle lanes along that goes through Sandymount and merges with the Merrion Road. It’s all about compromise.

    • The Irish Water one-way closures showed the negative affect of reallocating one lane on Strand Road were overblown. And that was done while providing no alternatives.

  2. Very much in favour of this cycle lane, hope it goes ahead. I get dangerously overtaken on this road regularly on my bike or honked at unnecessarily. It could and should be a pleasant place to cycle.

  3. I very much support this cycle lane too. I would love to be able to cycle this route with my kids but it is simply too dangerous at present. It would also my make my daily commute to work considerably safer.
