— Emergency motion to be discussed at a local area council meeting which is on-going at the moment.
BREAKING NEWS / TO BE UPDATED: After years of legal arguments the Strand Road cycle route trial was given the green light by the Court of Appeal but a councillor is today seeking to block the trial from going ahead.
The three-judge Court of Appeal found on Friday last that the High Court judge, who originally blocked the trial, erred on his view that the project needed planning permission and full environmental assessments.
An emergency motion has been put forward for the South East Area council meeting which is on-going as this article is published.
Cllr David Coffey, who was co-opted as a councillor in December 2024, replacing James Geoghegan when he became a TD.
The emergency motion asks the South East Area committee to agree that any cycle route on Strand Road is linked to the Sandymount Flood Relief “with the aim of delivering an off-road cycleway.”
Such a route depending on a flood scheme would take years or planning and construction to deliver while the trial, which is based on making the road one-way, could be in place in a matter of months. Dublin City Council said it welcomed the judgment but that it is assessing its next steps.
The motion is non-binding on council officials but may send a sign of how local councillors are thinking.
Other councillors on the local area committee but who represent the other end of the area have previously argued that the project should be seen as having a city-wide importance.
