Lime, an international shared e-scooter and e-bicycle company, said this morning that it is celebrating its users reaching 100,000 bicycle trips in Castlebar and Westport. Since they launched in September 2022, users have clocked up over 150,000 kilometres.
The bikes have been used by 25,000 residents and visitors in Castlebar and Westport, which Lime points out is 25% higher than the towns’ combined population of around 20,000 people.
Lizzy Day, operations manager for the UK and Ireland at Lime, said: “Since launching in Castlebar and Westport, residents and visitors have truly embraced Lime’s e-bikes as an alternative and green mode of transport to replace car journeys under five miles.”
“Usage has continued to grow and we’re hopeful that we’ll be seeing yet another record-breaking Summer in the coming months. We look forward to continuing to work with Mayo County Council to increase trips further and reduce carbon emissions,” she said.
Lime said the scheme in Castlebar was originally launched as a 12-month pilot scheme, but was extended due to its popularity.
Day added: “It’s clear that Irish towns and cities are increasingly adopting micromobility, and we have ambitions to launch our services in other parts of Ireland in the near future.”
Lime’s bikes in Mayo are used by paying an initial unlock fee of €1 with a charge of 19 cent per minute for the rest of the ride. Users are expected to return the bicycles to “dedicated parking zones to ensure that the bikes are parked responsibly, and avoid pavement obstructions.”
