Dublin City Council has launched its main Bike Week event, PedalPower Dublin, which will take place at the Sundrive Velodrome, Eamonn Ceannt Park, Crumlin from 12 noon to 4.00pm on Sunday, May 11th.
The council said that the event will have a range of family-friendly outdoor activities. It said that aim is to “promote a more sustainable urban mobility culture and illustrates lots of exciting ways to take climate action”.
It will include children’s activities, food trucks, bike maintenance workshops, BMX demonstrations, pedal-powered workshops and much.
Before the event, the PedalPower Cycle Parade, which will start at 11am at Eamonn Ceannt Park, will be a 7km family-friendly cycle with pickup points Bangor Circle, Mount Argus Park, Harold’s Cross Park and Parnell Road (Fire Station) before cycling back to Eamonn Ceannt Park.
The theme of the cycle is ‘bees and flowers’ and the council is asking people to feel free to dress up with colourful costumes for you or your bike.
Deputy Lord Mayor of Dublin, Donna Cooney, said: “I am delighted to be able to launch PedalPower Dublin this year. I think it is a fantastic chance to show that cycling is for everyone, from the small to the big steps Dubliners can take in our everyday lives to be happier, healthier and kinder to the environment.”
Lucy Hayes, walking and cycling officer with Dublin City Council, said: “This is a very exciting year for our event; we aim to celebrate all aspects of cycling culture, in a community setting. This year particularly, we have tried to promote the benefits of cycling for health, the planet and communities. The event is suitable for all ages and abilities, and we encourage everyone to come to Eamonn Ceannt Park on May 11th.”
Carmel O’Callaghan, active cities officer of Dublin City Council, said: “This parade and festival is a wonderful opportunity to get more people more active, more often. PedalPower promotes the benefit of making activity such as cycling part of everyday life while also improving our health, our community and the environment.
