Person cycling killed in a collision involving truck driver at Dublin’s Dolphins Barn Bridge

A person on an electric bicycle was killed in a collision which also involved a truck driver this afternoon at Dolphins Barn Bridge in Dublin.

After the initial emergency response was over (pictured), a bicycle was lying on the carriageway with crime scene markers on the ground around it at Dolphin’s Barn Bridge at the junction with Dolphin Road.

Earlier today, the Dublin Fire Brigade tweeted: “Dolphins Barn Bridge closed to all road users following a serious road traffic collision.”

Just before 8pm, the Garda Press Office said: “Gardaí attended the scene of a fatal road traffic collision involving a truck and an e-bike that occurred at approximately 12:30pm on Monday 6th November 2023 on the Dolphin’s Barn Bridge in Dublin 8.”

“The cyclist was taken to St James’s Hospital with serious injuries and they were later pronounced deceased. No other injuries to persons was reported,” the Garda Press Office said.

Dolphin’s Barn Bridge was closed for hours to allow a technical examination to be conducted by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

The Garda spokesperson added: “Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward. Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the Dolphin’s Barn Bridge area between 12:15pm and 12:45pm are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.”

Any witnesses or anybody with any information is asked to contact Crumlin Garda station on 01 666 6200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.

  1. It’s a horrible road for pedestrians and cyclists. Only a few hundred metres from where the child was hit earlier this year, but the council refused traffic calming measures still.

  2. Always cars parked in painted cycle lanes all day along the main canal road. They really should include double yellow lines in basic painted cycle lanes- odd I know, but drivers just ignore white painted cycle lanes- especially faded ones, as most seem to be these days – unfortunately the bollard is the only thing they ‘sort of’ notice these days.

I will say though that a lot of cyclists AND drivers jump lights all along the various bridge crossings. Not that this is related in this case. Speeds along the canal are far too high, without segregated lanes.

  3. A lot of HGV traffic in the area due to new hosp already a few fatalities involving HGV attributed to it should have been a tunnel for this traffic put underneath canal and dry canal would have provided access for hgvs to Naas Rd and when complete emergency vehicles direct access to hosp hgvs should be banned during school hours

  4. Or a bridge to phoenix Park tunnel under to M50 and €100 auto toll fee except for emergency vehicles..cheaper but obviously they have a plan to make all roads around Rialto one way once hospital opens…who can object to making ambulance faster with sick child and obviously a cycle lane will be included
