Man in his 70s killed while cycling on Dame Street, car driver injured in collision

A man in his 70s was killed while cycling on Dame Street in the early hours of this morning while the car driver involved in the collision was also injured.

The Garda Press Office said: “Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a fatal road traffic collision on Dame Street, Dublin 2 this morning, Saturday 18th May 2024 at approximately 5.25am.”

“The collision involved a car and a cyclist. The cyclist, a male aged in his 70s, was seriously injured during the collision. He was taken to St. James’ Hospital where he has since passed away,” the spokesperson said.

Gardaí said that the “driver of the car is currently receiving medical treatment for non-life threatening injuries.”

A technical examination of the scene by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators was conducted this morning.

Gardaí in Pearse Street are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.

“Any road users or pedestrians who were in the vicinity of Dame Street this morning between 5.00am and 5.45am, and who may also have camera footage (including dash cam), is asked to make this available to investigating Gardaí,” a spokesperson said.

The press office added that anyone with information which may assist Gardaí in their investigation is asked to contact Pearse Street Garda Station on 01 666 9000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
