Irish Cycle Facility of the Week

The two-way off-road cycle paths along the north quayside in the Dublin Docklands has some great features we should have already highlighted. A reader who uses it, Wojciech Jerzy Wieczorek, emails us to tell everybody how great it is:

“I wanted to highlight the issues with North Quays Cycle Path between Convention Centre and The Point Village. At some points it’s one way, at others two way. When you start your cycle from Convention Centre you suddenly find yourself going against the current at the first pedestrian crossing. Cyclists get confused and get angry with each other. We all know there’s plenty of space for dedicated two way cycle path, why change it and put cyclist heading east on the street? Why not letting cyclist enjoy the river bank? I don’t know.”

Hopefully the Liffey Cycle Route will not interfere too much in this landmark feature of the route. Belfast has the Bin Lane and the Cyclesaurus… should Dublin be naming its landmark cycle route features?

  1. If you go the opposite way from the Convention centre at Sam Beckett Bridge to the Talbot Memorial Bridge. You will find yourself on a two way off Road Cycle Track and if a foreigner you will think yipeee an off road Cycle track. But then after a hundred metres or less it ends and you are forced onto the road then after another hundred metre it begins again. There is plenty of room to put in a proper off road Cycle Track but they the DCC just have not bothered. Most Cyclists just ignore it and use the road, why bother.
