Nearly 30% of DublinBikes stations to shut for Pope’s visit

Nearly 30% of DublinBikes docking stations are to be closed from midnight Friday until Sunday at 10pm due to the Pope’s visit to Dublin.

The closures are an extension of the usual practice by the event management section of the Gardai to order stations to be closed for large events.

Station closures around events often happen in Dublin when there’s little to no apparent need for such closures — for example, the docking station is close to the edge of the event road closure and the station can be accessed with easy even at the peak of the event.

The 29 docking stations to be closed represents just under 30% of the 101 stations. The stations to close were listed on DublinBikes.ie today.

The stations to be closed are: Christchurch Place, High Street, Dame Street, Georges Quay, Cathal Brugha Street, Ormond Quay, Princess Street, Smithfield, James Street, Market Street South, St James Hospital Luas, St James Hospital Central, Mount Brown, Emmet Road, Brookfield Road, Rothe Abbey, Parkgate Street, Collins Barrack, Blackhall Place, Heuston Bridge North, Heuston Station Central, Heuston Station Carpark, Royal Hospital, Kilmainham Lane, Kilmainham Goal, Heuston Bridge South, Rathdown Road, Charleville Road, and Avondale Road.

Meanwhile, as we reported on Sunday, the Government has yet to announced details of the promised 2,500 bicycle parking spaces near the Phoenix Park. The Department of the Taoiseach said it was an issue for the National Transport Authority, while the authority said it was an issue for the Gardai, who have yet to respond to questions.

  1. The most bizarre thing about these closures is how long they are. From what I saw cycling past the park yesterday the road closures seem to be from 8am Sunday to 11pm Sunday (or less in places). Why are bike stations closed from Friday?
