People who want more investment in cycling infrastructure are being called to take part in a cycling protest tomorrow (Wednesday) in Dublin.
The protest to the Dail is to be run by Dublin Cycling Campaign and iBikeDublin under the iBikeiVote banner.
The groups said that the starting point of the protest is Merrion square West opposite National Gallery of Ireland beside the Dublin Bike station, gathering from 5.15pm and aiming to arrive at the Dáil just before 6pm on the Wednesday evening.
Paul Corcoran, chairman of the Dublin Cycling Campaign said: “The goal of this protest is to highlight that cyclists are voters too and we have a voice. The logo #iBikeIVote represents this clearly. The Councillors we elect will be in power for the next five years. There are two major reasons why cycling projects don’t happen in Dublin. Firstly, the NTA and the Minister of Transport does not provide enough funding for the councils on sustainable transport.
He said: “Councillors are voting against cycling infrastructure projects. You can change this by turning up on the 15th!”
He added: “We will be asking all local election candidates from Dublin city council, Fingal county council, South Dublin council and Dun Laoghaire Rathdown council to sign the http://cyclingforall.ie/ campaign which as a number of requests such as 20% transport spend on cycling and walking investment.”
Corcoran said that you can also support safer cycling in Dublin: emailing your candidates for the local and European elections and “tell them you want better funding for cycling and to sign up to cyclingforall.ie”.
