Cycle lane in Ranelagh narrowed after resurfacing

NEWS IN BREIF: A cycle Lane has been left narrowed beside car parking on the Ranelagh Road in Dublin after resurfacing works.

The cycle lanes in the street are due to be upgraded as part of the Clonskeagh cycle route, between Clonskeagh and the city centre. This project was delayed due to lack of resources linked with Luas Cross City works, but understands planning work on the route is starting again.

In the meanwhile, the resurfacing works has made the existing non-segregated cycle lane worse.

“It’s 2019 and Dublin City Council are narrowing their cycle lanes. Especially ones in the doorzone,” said Oisin O’Connor, a campaigner with the Dublin Cycling Campaign. He added: “If this gets your goat, raise the issue on …this is ridiculously bad and now a waste of council’s money with a repaint.” is reader-funded journalism.   1. A basic tenet of cycle lanes is that they indicate to the cyclist a safe postion to take up on the roadway. This cycle lane design fails in this regard and is a failure of duty of care on behalf of the Council. Also it looks like they have not put back the red surfacing thus degrading the level of service of the cycle track. What was the hosting of Velo-City 2019 by Dublin City Council all about then? So it’s business as usual: take a cycling facility that was was “average” and instead of improving it (e.g. by introducing physical segregation, elimiating on-street parking, etc.), degrade it. It is a billboard that says “We Dont Care. You Don’t Matter. Car is King”.
