Ranelagh to have car parking inside cycle lane after multi-million euro cycle route upgrade

UPDATED: Draft plan also has what campaigners call “murder strips” cycle lanes situated between traffic lanes.

BREAKING: Draft images have emerged of the planned Clonskeagh cycle route which show that Ranelagh is to get lightly segregated cycle track and at section is to have car parking inside a cycle lane.

Dublin City Council and the National Transport Authority are developing the route, and councillors are to be briefed on the emerging preferred route on Monday.

Despite on-going illegal parking in Ranelagh as well as confusion over part-time cycle lanes, the new route plan seems to use National Transport Authority’s preferred stepped up cycle track design, which is viewed as medium or light segregation unsuitable for areas of high parking demand.

UPDATE #2: There’s conflicting images showing the parking inside and outside the cycle track:

Elsewhere on the route the drawings show parking inside the cycle track and there’s no conflicting drawing or sketch for this:

  1. Plans like this have no merit and should be rejected outright. End the contract with the design consultants and start the process from scratch with new designers. Some engagement with cycling advocates in the design stage would also be great, rather than just consulting the off license, the pharmacy and the flower shop about what kind of cycling infrastructure best suits their car parking desires.

  2. They really need to bite the bullet and get rid of the on street parking between the entrance to Sandford Park school and the triangle. That would allow for enlarged footpaths and segregated cycle lanes throughout.

Ranelagh could get a lovely village feel if they got those cars out of there As it is, it’s often a manic experience travelling through it with cars weaving in and out.

  3. The 75-25-50 mm kerb upstand arrangement is completely bonkers. Firstly the kerb to cycle track SHOULD NEVER BE GREATER THAN 50mm to facilitate cyclists to enter and leave the cycle track at any point and also so as not to present a hazard in the event of cycling off the (50mm) kerb. This is what the dutch do. Not sure what the 25mm kerb is there for – I guess it defines the edge of parking bay but it’s not realy needed and could be a trip hazard. 50mm kerb for footpath is not enough to keep parked vehicles wheels off the footpath. The correct kerb arrangement here should be 50-0-100 mm (cycle track – bay – path) assuming that there is 150mm vertical to play with.

  4. to be honest ist a pretty small number of parking spaces to lose and the main drag would be better for everyone if there were wider footpaths – (more outdoor dining space) and a safer cycle infrastructure. As a motorist (and a cyclist) I dont relish the thoughts of whats proposed.
