Gardai nab reckless motorists going so fast they didn’t see high visibility speed enforcement

— List shows all of “notable detections” in 24 hours of National Slow Down Day.

A Garda operation has caught nearly 900 reckless motorists going so fast they failed to see high visibility speed enforcement, which was announced ahead of time and with the usual amount of other motorists warning on-coming cars.

Now, back to the article...

The Gardai said that National Slow Down Day was held over a 24 hour period between Friday at 7am to this morning at 7am 12th December.

The Gardai press office said that Gardai and GoSafe checked 186,125 vehicles and detected 892 vehicles travelling in excess of the relevant  speed limit.

“An Garda Siochana and the RSA would like to thank the 185,233 drivers who were found to be compliant and drove within the speed limit and would encourage all drivers to drive safely, comply with and respect speed limits,” a statement said.

However, the detection rate of high-visibility policing is far below what is detected with unmarked speed checks. For example, the ‘Free Speed Survey’ by the Road Safety Authority shows that the percentage of car drivers breaking the speed limit on urban roads was 52% in 2018 and, when residential roads are excluded, 65%.

According to RSA data, t he percentage of motorists speeding on regional 80km/h roads increased from 39% in 2016 to 50% in 2018. The detection rate in the RSA survey is lower on motorways — at 23%.

The Garda press office released a number of lists of notable detection locations in the 24 hour period of National Slow Down Day, here’s the combined list:
