Plans for pedestrianisation Capel Street in Dublin will face a further public consultation before implementation this Summer.
Dublin City Council held a public consultation last year which received 6,957 submissions and 90% responded said that they wanted some form of traffic-free Capel Street further developed.
Given the timeline outlined to a councillor, as below, the measures will likely be in place ahead of any long-term repaving and other permanent measures which might be included.
In a written question, Cllr Janet Horner (Green Party) said: “To ask the Chief Executive what the timeline and process will be for bringing forward proposals for pedestrianisation improvements around the Capel Street area? And to confirm that these proposals will include the existing proposals for pedestrianisation of Liffey Street and Mary Street?”
The reply from council officials outlined the proposed timeline for Capel Street is as follows:
- January/February – “Continued work on a number of options and assessment of their impact.”
- March 2022 – “Options for Capel Street presented to Councillors at Area Committee with recommendation for preferred option.”
- Apr/May 2022 – “Consultation on the preferred option with local businesses and residents and the general public.”
- May/June 2022 – “Implement changes.”
- Oct 2022 – “Review and assessment.”
The response added: “The measures for Capel St will be implemented separately to any other measures but the design will take account of these other schemes.”
