Man dies in hospital after being found in cycle lane in Sligo, Gardaí seeking witnesses and footage

A man in his 50s who was cycling was found dead in a cycle lane last night in Sligo.

The incident happened on Pearse Road in the town — the image is a file image, the incident happened beyond the junction pictured in the photo.

The Garda Press Office said: “Gardaí at Sligo attended at the scene of a road traffic incident involving a cyclist shortly after 11:30pm on Wednesday, 13th December 2023 on Pearse Road, Sligo.

“The cyclist, a male aged in his 50s was found in the cycle lane with serious injuries. He was removed by ambulance to Sligo University Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.”

The Garda spokespersonnsais that the local Coroner has been notified and a post-mortem examination will be arranged.

In a statement issue just before 8am, Gardaí said: “The scene is currently preserved for examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and traffic diversions are in place. Motorists approaching Sligo town on Pearse road are currently being diverted onto Cemetery Road.”

The spokesperson added: “Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward. They are also appealing to road users with camera footage (including dash-cam) from the scene at Pearse Road, Sligo between 11:30pm and 12 midnight to make it available to them.”
