And the winners are….

After the National Transport Authority started promoting public transport as an alternative to taking your car for Christmas shopping — we said why not promote cycling too, so, we teamed up with The Cambridge Raincoat CompanyDutchbikeshop.ie and Kidsbikes.ie to promote shopping by bicycle.

All of the entries can be viewed here: Proof: Shopping by bicycle is possible in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

A Dutch “MyBasket” bicycle shopping basket from Dutchbikeshop.ie is the second prize and that goes to Andrew Potts for his image:

This competition will hopefully be the start of a longer-running focus on shopping by bicycle — thank you to all who entered and helped promote the idea that shopping by bicycle is possible a lot more than most people think. View all of the entries here.

Why go by bike?

You’re far less likely to get stuck in traffic and you won’t have to squeeze into a bus or tram. In parts of Ireland few people cycle to shops, but even in the Grafton Street area of Dublin where bicycle shopping is relatively high, 2011 research from DIT showed retailers overestimated car users and underestimated bicycle use. Back then, nearly as many shoppers cycled as used cars, and twice as many just walked. Cycling use has boomed in the area in the years since.
