Galway Cycle Bus celebrates first month of escorting children on bicycles to school

— Cycle Bus helps children negotiate difficult junctions and crossings.

In its first month of marshalling children on bicycles to school the Galway Cycle Bus has included 361 individual trips in total with an average of 19 children a day.

The children’s average journey time was 18 minutes and, despite more dreary looking days as Galway is known for, the group only encountered one rain shower en route.

On Friday the group said that there “zero reasons we can’t continue”. It added: “Huge appreciation and thanks to all the parents for trusting us. To all at Gaelscoil Mhic Amhlaigh and at Knocknacarra National School for believing in us. To our supporters @cosaingalway, Galway Cycling Campaign, Galway Bay Cycling Club, An Taisce GreenSchools for advising us. Lastly, to the children for inspiring us.”

For the month there was only one cancelled service due to the storm.

The Galway Cycle Bus’ success doesn’t stop there, they said: “We’ve noticed that there is a significant uptake in cycling to both schools since we’ve started. For obvious reasons, travelling on our bus doesn’t suiteveryone. Our goal was never about maximising our users, but normalising it for everyone. We’re making good progress.”

  1. Great work, a textbook example of being the change you want to see, of acting rather than calling for others to act. Well done to all involved, hopefully others might be inspired to try it. Also what a great way to start the school day, with the fun and camaraderie of a group ride.
