A judicial review of Galway Ring Road was lodged to the High Court by Friends of the Irish Environment.
The N6 ring road — which is expected to cost close to €1 billion — was approved by An Bord Pleanala last year despite the planning authority accepting that building the road would mean an increase in carbon emissions.
Government parties disagree with each other with the building of the road — the Green Party want climate assessment of such projects before Government signs off on them, while it has been reported in recent weeks that Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil politicians are already complaining that roads projects have been delayed.
When contacted Friends of the Irish Environment said it did not want to comment on the case in advance of it being heard in Court. But the move was welcomed by Galway-base Senator Pauline O’Reilly (Green Party).
Senator O’Reilly said: “The Galway Ring Road is an old solution to traffic problems in Galway. This will only lead to more sprawl and more problems.”
She added: “I have huge concerns that An Bord Pleanála did not take into consideration the effects on emissions when coming to their decision. They have obligations under the Climate Act and Climate Action Plan to do so and I welcome a transparent Judicial Review of the decision.”
