Third teenager on bicycle rushed to hospital in four days after collisions involving motorists

A teenage girl was airlifted to hospital yesterday after a collision involving her bicycle and the car driven by a female motorist in her 30s in Clonea Road, Dungarvan — it’s the third such incident involving teenagers on bicycles being seriously injured in collisions with motorists in just a few days.

Late last night, Sargent Margaret Flanagan at the Garda Press Office, said: “Gardaí attended the scene of a serious road traffic collision that occurred on Clonea Road, Dungarvan, late this afternoon, Thursday 26th May, 2022.”

“At approximately 4p.m. today Gardaí were alerted to a road traffic collision involving a car and a pedal cyclist. The pedal cyclist, a girl in her teens, was taken to Cork University Hospital by helicopter and remains in a critical condition. The female driver, late 30s, of the car was treated at the scene for shock,” she said.

Gardai said that the road was closed for a time to allow for a technical examination to be conducted by Forensic Collision Investigators.

In a statement, the Garda spokesperson added: “Gardaí in Dungarvan are appealing for any witnesses who were in the Clonea Road area this afternoon and who may have footage (including Dash Cam) to make it available to them. Anyone with information is asked to contact Dungarvan Garda Station on 058 48600, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.”

The incident yesterday follows from two similar collisions involving teenagers on bicycles and motorists driving vehicles. Exact ages were not given in all cases, which seem to involve a mix of teenage children and young adults in their teenage years.

On Monday at around 5.30pm a male in his late teens was knocked off his bicycle in a collision with a person driving a truck in Tuam, Co Galway. The teenager was taken to University Hospital Galway to be treated and then transferred to Beaumont Hospital where his condition was described as serious.

On Tuesday, a 19-year-old woman was described as being in ‘critical’ condition in Cork University Hospital after a collision involving her on a bicycle and a motorist driving a taxi at the junction of Anglesea Street and Union Quay in Cork in the early hours of the morning.
