Car-free Capel Street sees 20% jump in people cycling and 12% increase in pedestrians

— Public feedback sought on car-free Capel Street.

Dublin City Council has said that there has been a 12% increase in pedestrian numbers and a 20% increase in people cycling on Capel Street since cars were removed from the street in May.

The new consultants comes as groups against car-free Capel Street continue to put pressure on Councillors, as this website reported in July.

The public consultation ahead of making the street car-free included 1,700 submissions with 91% of respondents in favour of the project. The new consultation is seeking feedback on how people think the measures are working out.

Dublin City Council said that it “would like to invite feedback from residents, local businesses and members of the public on the recent traffic management measures which saw Capel St made traffic-free.”

“This public consultation period will remain open from today for a period of 4 weeks. Since the street was made traffic-free, there has been a 12% increase in pedestrian numbers and a 20% increase in cyclists.”
