NEWS IN BRIEF: A trial safety mirror has been installed on traffic along the Grand Canal in Dublin with the aim of giving left turning motorists a clearer view of cyclists..
These mirrors have been previously used on junctions in cities such as Amsterdam and London, but are often viewed by local campaigners as at best a stopgap or at worst a distraction from better junction design or implementing separate traffic light sequences.
According to Dublin City Council: “A trial safety mirror has been fitted at the junction of Canal Rd and Ranelagh Rd for traffic turning left onto Charlemont St, this trial is part of an ongoing programme to improve road safety for cyclists.”

Back in September transport Minister Shane Ross announced funding of €400,000 for “smart” junction improvements aimed mainly at cycling safety. It’s not clear at this point if this is part of that project as details were vague at the time of the announcement.
