The Never Ending Delay: Royal Canal Greenway in Dublin City was approved in 2015 and might start after Easter

— Project approved in 2015 but plagued by ongoing delays.

Work is now expected to start on phase three of the Royal Canal Greenway in the Dublin City Council areas after Easter, although a local councillor who has tracked the project’s delays said he cannot be confident of that the timeline.

130km of the Royal Canal Greenway is finished between the River Shannon near Longford and Maynooth in Co Kildare, but in Co Dublin the project keeps being delayed.

Phase three of the Royal Canal Greenway starts at North Strand Road, goes across the Drumcondra Road and goes as far as the Phibsborough Road. Delays in recent years are understood to be around tendering and the increasing costs of the project.

Cllr Ray McAdam (Fine Gael) said: “I have been frustrated about the continued delays in advancing this project and wanted to be able to provide some certainty to those who want to see this project delivered. The short answer is that, the Council hopes, construction work will start after Easter.”

TIMELINE OF COVERAGE:

“The Executive Engineer in the Sustainable Mobility Division of the City Council confirmed that tenders for the construction phase were received in the first half of this year. Following the assessment of these tenders, additional governance procedures are needed due to the increased construction costs of delivering Phase 3 of the Royal Canal Greenway,” he said,

Cllr McAdam added: “In posting this update, I have to be honest in saying that, I cannot be confident that the timeline shared with me will be met but you can be assured that I will continue to pursue this issue until a contractor is appointed and works have started between Ossory Road and Cross Guns Bridge.”

On the Dublin City section, Phase 3 is complicated by narrow inner-city sections, access ramps and major road crossing. On the other hand, Phase 4 from Phibsborough to the border with Fingal County Council is relatively straight forward but it was brought back to the planning stage last year to widen a section shared with motorist access to a small number of houses and properties.

Fingal County Council section of the route is complicated by delays due to objections against the council’s solution for the Deep Sinking section of the canal, which runs from around Castleknock train station to the Porterstown area.
