Liffey Cycle Route boardwalk plan to keep cars on quays in doubt after costs spiral “above €100m“

— Project first proposed in 2010 and interim measures not fully installed 2 years after approval.

Liffey Cycle Route boardwalk plan — design to keep cars on the quays — is in doubt after costs spiral to “above €100m“.

IrishCycle.com was the first to report that the Liffey Cycle Route costs spiralled to “above €100m” so that cars can stay on quays.

The solution of using boardwalks was agreed after councillors would not make what officials called “difficult decision” to removing cars from the quays.

But according to The Irish Times today Dublin City Council’s chief executive Owen Keegan told the newspaper that the “gold-plated scheme” with boardwalks was unlikely to ever go ahead. Traffic management proposals would have to be revisited, he said.

The Irish Times said that Keegan would not say whether the traffic management measures would require what the newspaper called a “car-ban” at the pinch-points on the quays.

The newspaper quoted Keegan as having said: “I am confident that we will be able to address the sections on both quays [that are] without dedicated cycling priority through traffic management measures. If this is the case, there may be no need for the ‘gold-plated’ scheme that was previously proposed.”
